Trump says sovereignty of Mauritius should not be debatable

(MENAFN) Mauritius has asserted that its sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago is indisputable and “should no longer be subject to debate,” responding to US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks.

Trump had criticized Britain’s transfer of control over the islands to Mauritius, calling it “great stupidity” and accusing the UK of giving away strategically important territory hosting a US military base.

The Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia, was separated from Mauritius by Britain in 1965, before Mauritius gained independence. The US has leased Diego Garcia for military use, while around 2,000 residents were displaced.

In May 2025, Britain officially signed an agreement transferring sovereignty to Mauritius, while the US and UK retain control of the military base for 99 years.

Mauritian authorities, including Attorney General Gavin Glover, stressed that the treaty was negotiated exclusively between Mauritius and the UK, is consistent with international law, and should be implemented without delay, despite Trump’s recent criticisms.
